 Music Education at Kalbar

Music education has enormous and positive benefits for studnets.  Research is clear that people who are musically trained have improved working memory, fine motor skills and even imporoved maths and reading skills compared to those who do not have musical training in childhood.  Music has also been proven to have a positive impact on mental health and well-being.

Our school offers the extremely unique opportunity for students to be part of a rock band.  All students in Year 3 - Year 6 are offered a rich experience to play guitars and drums as well as sing every week as part of whole class Rock Band Lessons.  In these lessons students are taught the fundamentals of guitar and drums including rhythm, coordination, time-keeping and numerous techniques.  Learning any musical instrument requires patience, commitment and dedication.  These lessons provide an insight into the fun, skills and benefits of listening to and creating music.

Primarily Rock - Kalbar State School's own rock band:

Primarily Rock is our school's own talented rock band.  Students who play in a band learn teamwork, discipline and how to work together to achieve a common goal.

They also learn how to read music and how to play their instrument in a group setting.  Playing in a band gives students a sense of accomplishment and pride.  We teach students the fundamentals of guitar, bass and drums.  Students who are in Primarily Rock will need further lessons outside the lessons they receive in class time.  Active band members have private lessons and whole band practice from 7:30 - 8:30 am Wednesdays as well as Wednesday and Thursdays at both play breaks.  Band members commit to the before school practice and at least first break practice on Wednesday.

Rock Band Choir:

Students are invited to join the Primarily Rock Choir.  Singing as part of a band or choir has been demonstrated to improve the social and emotional well-being of young people.  In this choir, students practice singing a set of songs and coordinating dance moves.  Students keen to practicipate in the choir can come to school early for whole of band practice from 7:30-8:30 am Wedenesdays as well as Wednesday and Thursdays at both play breaks.  Students in the choir commit to attending practice at least twice a week.

Performances:

Primarily Rock performs at local events in the community.  Primarily Rock has performed at Kalbar Show, Kalbar Country Day.  Light Up Kalbar and other local events.  Primarily Rock has visited and performed for other primary schools and performs in a large concert one a year.
